Let The Sun Shine In!
Let The Sun Shine In!
I know a person who constantly introduces or accentuates the negative
in conversation and despite my protests keeps it up on an ongoing basis.
This person will remain nameless, but could be called "Negative Nellie".
Do you know or have such a person in your life? If so, how do you deal with the stream of negativity?
My approach is to attempt to shut it down as soon as it is incoming. I even rudely interrupt. Anything to stop the stream.
At this point in life I only want to hear and know the good and positive and, thankfully, there is a lot if you make room for it. Accentuate the positive and let the sun shine in!
Just call me Half Full Freddie :)

I am of the same cloth except the rudely interrupt part - but perhaps i am rude at times.

If I have a choice, I choose…
If I have a choice, I choose not to be around that person.
If I don't have a choice, I try to let it flow and respond as little as possible (I've never done any martial arts, but I like to think of it as a "be like a willow in the wind" concept where you let the opponent's own momentum work against them). The other person may or may not understand why I'm doing that, they may even think I'm not listening or I'm rude, but they do know that the conversation isn't going anywhere so hopefully they change course or walk away. :)

Guest User : RitaSue SiegelI confess. I am guilty of the negativity emphasis. I know we do not talk about politics in Gotham, and perhaps I don’t try hard enough, but my formerly very positive outlook is being smothered by the words and actions of the clown in charge who is destroying our country.

Guest User : TrinaI can be critical but thats different than being negative. At the airport, flight delayed 7 hours. Everyone is complaining. Whats the point? It is what it is. Go have a good meal, enjoy a cocktail, and just accept it. I too often try to find the good. Constant complaining is irritating.
Good for you Trina!

It still surprises that, at my age and place in my career, I am still seeing the behavior you so eloquently describe. I just say, I'd rather not discuss.
